Often known as the last glimmer of hope for people who have lost all hope for conceiving a child, Dr. Supriya Puranik is a leading gynecologist, high-risk obstetrician, and Head of IVF & Gynaecology department at Sahyadri Super Specialty Hospital.
From a 52-year-old woman who had given up on becoming a mother to a 32-year-old woman with 18 failed IUI and IVF treatments, she has helped thousands of women to rediscover the joy and happiness of becoming a mother. She was also the only doctor from Asia to be featured in a BBC documentary.
When she was young, she witnessed that the beautiful pure joy of childbirth turning into pain and suffering for her neighbor’s family when they lost the mother and a newborn child due to inaccessibility to timely and effective treatment. She believes that to be the moment she decided to become a doctor.
Along with her passion and empathy for women and children, she is also armed with impressive educational background and experience of more than 18 years.
After finishing MBBS as a university ranked in 1992, she gained two more degrees, D.G.O in 1995 and D.N.B. in 1997. At the early beginning of her career, she understood that infertility was one of the biggest issues faced by many women in India, especially since women often associate ‘motherhood’ with their identity and self-worth, and infertility would make them feel worthless. She saw that it was difficult for women to even discuss infertility as society blamed women be the cause of a couple is infertile.
This motivated her to further study infertility as there were only a handful of infertility and IVF centers. Along with her team, she delivered the first test-tube baby in the Satara District and helped treat infertility amongst hundreds of couples in semi-urban and rural areas around Karad (Satara) before moving to Pune in 2013, where she continued her work in infertility, pregnancy, and other gynecological problems.
Dr.Puranik is known for successfully handling complicated cases of patients, often rejected by other doctors due to the risk involved. She credits her success to her and her team’s holistic approach to treat patients. They understand that every patient is different and thus, it is very important to understand their personal situation along with the medical diagnosis to create a customized treatment for effective results.
Aside from being a very successful gynecologist, she is also a popular teacher. She has taught at Krisha Medical Institute for 5 years and gives lectures to junior gynecologists, general practitioners on new development in reproductive medicine and obstetrics-gynecology.
Highly-trained and honored by the medical community & loved and revered by her patients, she hopes to bring more joy to people’s lives through her work as a doctor.
